After a quiet summer full of recruiting misses, the Notre Dame staff now has some action, and some hope putting together another high level class. In late July, the Irish staff secured a commitment from four star guard and South Bend native Markus Burton. Since Burton's commitment, the Irish staff has put the full court press on four star guard Parker Freidrichsen in hopes to secure a commitment from the sharpshooter. Over the last few weeks, it seems that the same statement applies to Harvard Westlake wing, Brady Dunlap. Mike Brey and his staff were late entrants to both recruitments, but seem to have a legitimate chance in both of them, especially if Dunlap's visit this weekend is successful.
After Dunlap's successful summer on the EYBL circuit playing with Bronny James and Strive For Greatness, the Irish staff sent out an offer on August 23rd. Just days later, Dunlap cut his list to six and included the Irish along with Providence, Nebraska, Rice, San Diego State, and Colorado. The 6'7 forward has already visited San Diego State and will visit Colorado next weekend as well.
This summer on the EYBL circuit, Dunlap helped himself by averaging 16.0 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists while shooting 34% from beyond the arc. The four star forward also showed off his ability to play off of high level ballhandlers as a second or third option. Having that experience will certainly help the Harvard Westlake standout as he moves up to the college level.
Learning how to be an off the ball, complementary piece will be important for Dunlap's projectability at the next level. Although the talented wing has some floor game, he is likely better working off of the catch or a few bounces. Dunlap is a fluid and capable scorer off the bounce, though. The 6'7 forward has nice touch on his jumper and the length to get it off over contests. The top 150 player is also a capable driver and still has some room to grow as a finisher. Notre Dame could secure themselves a real offensive weapon if they can make strides in Dunlap's recruitment this weekend.
The California native can also be a nice chess piece for Mike Brey and staff defensively, Dunlap's length and agility can allow him to defend 1-4 against most ACC teams. Although the highly touted recruit likely needs to put on some muscle in order to be an effective college defender and rebounder, its easy to see how he could evolve into a nice piece on that end for someone down the line.
After hosting Parker Freidrichsen a few weeks ago and James Brown this past weekend, Mike Brey and staff have yet another important weekend ahead of them that will be crucial to putting together a highly ranked 2023 class.
