In a Surprising statement released by Notre Dame basketball Communications it was announced that assistant Coach Ryan Ayers has left the program because he is "pursing other opportunities". As a result former Notre Dame guard Scott Martin has been promoted from his job as a recruiting coordinator/team development coach to fill Ayers role as an interim assistant coach.
Ayers contributed 4 years on the coaching staff in which he coached guards such as Matt Farrell, Steve Vasturia, Prentiss Hubb, and TJ Gibbs. The former Irish guard was a nice complement to other members of the staff because of his age and outgoing personality which helped with recruiting. Outside of his role of coaching the guards Ayers has been considered as one of the best recruiters on the staff and seems to be very relatable to young players looking to play college basketball. Ayers' absence could have some effects on class of 2022 recruiting which includes a lot of highly ranked guards that he was involved with.
Coach Martin filled a new role on the staff last season as a Recruiting Coordinator/Team Development coach where he handled video work for the team and helped other coaches on the staff with recruiting. Martin will assume Ayers role as the coach of the guards at least for now. It is unclear if there will be another coach hired or if the former Irish guard will assume the role long term. This will definitely be a step up from his old position but Martin has 6 years of college basketball experience along with a few years of professional experience which gives a lot of hope that he will be able to pick up where Ayers left off.
Over the next year we will see how Ayers leaving will effect recruiting and on court performance from the guards. For now all we know is that Scott Martin will be filling his role and hopefully we won't notice much of a difference.
