In College Basketball you can never look a year ahead or call a year a “rebuild year” but for Notre Dame this may be true. If everything stays true the Irish would only be losing Center Juwan Durham and SG Nikola Djogo who are both seniors this upcoming year.
The Irish already have one recruit committed in the 2021 recruiting class in 4 star J.R. Konieczny a 6’6 Forward from South Bend. Along with J.R. the Irish have been connected to Guard Blake Wesley another 4 star 6’4 Guard who is also from South Bend.
The Irish have also been interested in Alex Fudge and Stevie Mitchell who are both 4 stars, but the Irish have not offered either of them at this moment.
Besides the possible incoming freshmen, the 2020-21 season gives Matt Zona, Elijah Taylor, and Tony Sanders all time to develop. It has been very Notre Dame like for players to develop in their 2nd-3rd season when given the opportunity. Zona, and Taylor both big men would be the pieces missing for the lineup once Durham leaves along with Nate Laszewski.
The secret piece to this team…Trey Wertz the transfer from Santa Clara who has 2 years of eligibility left in the NCAA. Wertz is a 6’4 Guard from Charlotte, North Carolina who averaged 12 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.9 assists as a sophomore last season. Wertz along with Hubb who will be a senior could be one of the scariest backcourts to play in the ACC.
Here is the potential 2021-2022 Notre Dame starting lineup. Prentiss Hubb, Trey Wertz, Cormac Ryan, Elijah Taylor, Nate Laszewski. Scary.
Then here is the bench…Dane Goodwin, Matt Zona, Robby Carmoody, Tony Sanders, J.R. Konieczny, Blake Wesley, and Elijah Morgan. Top to bottom all great players, this could be one of the deepest rosters in Notre Dame History.
Don’t forget the Irish could stay pick up a grad-transfer big to round out the roster just to give a little size to the lineup.
Now, Notre Dame Basketball Fans, I know you have been waiting for a while for us to get back to March Madness, but better days are coming. Keep rooting for these Irish because in a year…the ACC could be ours.
